Going To The Dogs - SOLD

Here is my latest oil painting of a Boston terrier that I call "Ready For My Closeup".

"Couch Surfing" - PRIVATE COLLECTION

I was told this dog refuses to use her doggie bed. She prefers the couch. So I named this painting "Couch Surfing".
I painted it in oil on an 8' X 10" canvas.

"What's UP or What's Woof?"

I painted this adorable Boston terrier as a quick study watercolor. I blocked in bright colors and then drew the portrait. I made adjustments and added appropriate detail. Fun piece.

An Old Favorite

This is an acrylic painting that I did about 18 years ago. I painted it the night before a competition and it won a ribbon. I still have it as it is one of my favorites. Very simple.

Sunny Day at Battery Point Lighthouse

Nope,  I am not tired of painting this little lighthouse yet. I am intrigued by the different compositions and views of this Crescent City tourist attraction.

Refresh My Memory

I had an opportunity to take a refresher course on watercolor with artist and instructor, Audi Stanton.

I might have mentioned before that I have been taking classes with Audi since 1994 in Sacramento, California.

In this class, Audi instructed, demonstrated and provided the students with wonderful examples to help us reinforce what we needed to learn.  Then we had to prove that we were paying attention by picking up our brushes, watercolors, and trying it out.


Here are some of the funny and important watercolor tips I learned.

If you save  the white of the paper, you can, also, save paint and money.

Rocks really aren't  hard.

Houses look better with doors and windows.

It takes practically nothing to cloth the naked.

The Darker Side of Battery Point Lighthouse, Crescent City, CA

Here is an oil painting of the darker side or rather the shadow side of the Crescent City, California's Battery Point Lighthouse. I wanted to share the beginning and end stages of this painting style.

I am using a palette knife with oils on an 8"x10" board. 

Stage 1  with pure color and value and  moving to stage 2.

Stage 2 adjusting value and layering color.  Sorry, I forgot to photograph stage 3.

This is the last stage after reviewing color relationship, comparing, adjusting and  adding detail.

When I look at the differences between stage 1 and the last stage, it even dumbfounds me and I am the painter.

RollIng In The Mud

I am finally able to get back to rolling in the mud with my slab roller.
I am working with GR pottery forms that I purchased from Alpha Ceramics in Sacramento, California and plaster molds from a garage sale. The clay I am using B-mix with grog
The final pieces were painted with Amaco Potter's Choice,  fired at cone 5 with a medium setting and held for 10 minutes.

This is how it looks on my beach style place setting.  I love the size because it fits perfectly over my charger.

My New Paintings At Wright's Framing

Here are my new paintings hanging at Wright's Framing in Brookings, Oregon.
I painted a series of lighthouses in oil of Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, California and  a watercolor of Bandon Lighthouse in Bandon, Oregon.
I also painted a whimsical painting of  beach houses at Harris Beach in Brookings, Oregon.
Oh and there is a small painting in oil of Arch Rock located between  Brookings, Oregon and Gold Beach, Oregon.
I hope you enjoy them as much I did painting them!

From A Distance - SOLD

This is a painting of Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, CA from a distance. This view is a street view from the south side of Pebble Beach.
This was painted in June when the wild lilac blooms. You can see it in the foreground.
This little lighthouse with museum is accessible during low tide and is located at the foot of A street.

Beach Houses

This is a view from Harris Beach in Brookings, Oregon of  beach houses.
I struggled with it for three days but enjoyed the challenges.

Battery Point Lighthouse, Crescent City, CA

Here is an oil painting of Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, California. It is painted on an 8x10 gesso board with palette knife. I included a picture of how it was started with large shapes and pure color.
