Here is my stage 3 color study. I need to fix my drawing and add changes in the pot.
I am happy with the results so far. Good lesson.

Brush and Color Study 02/24/11

This is my morning study. I used some of the technique from yesterday's class and the color I am learning with Susan Sarback.
This study is using a toned canvas and blocking it in. I learned how to do that with the beginning oil painting class. Works fabulously.
Then, I drew out the still life and blocked in the values with same color I used to tone my canvas. Love the technique! I am very happy with this hour and half study.

Sign Me Up, Again, Please

I completed my six week course with Beginning Oil painting with Randy Blasquez at the School of Light and Color. I wanted to see more so I signed up for another day.
Today we did a paint along with Randy. We worked all worked together in class painting a wonderful painting by Russian Impressionist painter, Sergei Bongart.
Here is my unfinished study.

Tin Can Flower Series

In 2005, I decide to paint a series of tin can flowers. I spent days in my studio mixing gray colors and painting the cut daisies from my backyard. I put them into a tin can and painted them.
I loved painting them because they were fun and loose.
Here is one I have. I wonder why I can't paint flowers like this today. I have become a tight painter.

Completed Color Study 02/14/11

Here is my completed color study of a female statue, Venus De Milo, a glass vase with lavender and a small bowl. It forced me to look at the objects with a critical eye and understand what I was seeing. Very difficult. This took me two weeks to complete in class.

Advanced Drawing

Here is a picture from last week's advanced drawing class. I was having a difficult time drawing that day but I kept with it. This is the better study.

Weekend Drawing Workshop: Learn the Six Universal Skill-Sets of Drawing

I was in wonderful workshop this weekend instructed by David Lobenberg. What a treat! He taught the six universal skill sets of drawing. He is high energy and enthusiastic which made the class wonderful. I loved his demos, too. I have taken several drawing classes with talented art instructors and I always pick up a new "gem" of knowledge.
David had several tips I did now know.

Paint Along

Here is the painting from today's paint along with the instructor, Randy Blasquez. It was a good study.
That class observed how Randy would paint a still life in each stage and then the class work on their still life of the same objects.

Another Color Study with Brush

I am fascinated by Susan Sarback's stage 2 process to painting and how you can apply it to painting Russian Impressionist style. So, I practiced another small color study today. It was more difficult because I was chasing the sun. The cat just didn't want me to work with the halogen light and I just can't say no to the that cute, little face.
Here is a study of a wine bottle and a black pitcher. The wine bottle was shortened a bit on purpose. I like the results.

Color Study with Brush

Brush is so much easier to me than palette knife and mixing on the canvas. So, I took a moment to do a simplified color study of flowers in a glass vase.
I am using my new industrial strength halogen light so I don't have to chase the sun. The cat became very upset because I closed the curtains so the outdoor light wouldn't change my setup. The cat, Sheeba, didn't understand where her sun went to I reopened the curtains.
Cat has priority.
Back to the painting. I like that I could simplify the flowers. I am put very little detail in this painting.

Working on a Stage 3 Study

Here is today's stage 3 study. I am painting a statue with a purple glass vase and a small ceramic bowl. HARD!
The darkest shadow of the statue needs to be greener before I continue. Good study.

Best Day of My Life

This is the best day of my life. I celebrate it every year. It is the day my son was born. We are taking him out to dinner where I can retell the story of his birth and what a wonderful day it was.
I also worked on my little flower study, went shopping for canvas, clothes and meat for next week's dinners. I brought petite pies to my son's house and he shared one with me. We talked about college, the scary catfish of the Amazon and other stories. It was a nice.

Beginning Oil Painting with a Brush - Day 3

We had a paint along with the instructor today to follow how to paint the same still life together. Good process. Here is my start. Because I am using geoso board, the under painting was not staying in place. That is okay. Once it dries, I can fix it.
I head to Utretcht and picked up a few sale canvases and turquoise oil paint on sale, too.

Beginning Oil With Russian Impressionistic Style

Here is the painting from my other class. It is almost complete. I worked on it before class. I just need to bright the flowers and it should be done.

I Couldn't Stop at Stage 2

I just couldn't stop at stage 2. I am back to the blocks and the sun is shining and I just couldn't stop.

Class Study Begins

Here is a new class study. It took me a while to get the drawing on the board. I still struggle with ellipses but I can tell when they are wrong.
I can't wait to see the progress on this study. It is more difficult but a good one. I like the composition, too.

Contour and Flower

I worked on a loose contour drawing today with my sharpie just to relax and draw. I added some highlights to an oil and I worked on seeing simple shapes in a flower. No, two stage painting today. I couldn't find two hours today after visiting my son, the gym, church and taking care of the house. I did find time to draw and, later, paint for an hour.
Tomorrow is another day. I can't wait.

Thrift Store Score

Here are the pieces I picked up on my thrift store score. I shop the half off days and this it what I found. Small blue bottle, a flower in resign in clear, round, glass vase, a nice oriental pottery vase and a beautiful black pitcher with lid.
You can't see me right now but I am dancing to the music in my head.

Three down and Forty Seven to Go

Here is today's stage 2 study. I went thrift store shopping to get a few more items for my still life studies.
This is a poppy in a bottle with a pear.
Fun.

My ezPort Arrived!

I saw oil painting artists with the ezPort carriers and I had to have one. Why? My paints slide all over the place in my car. It wasn't a problem at first because I was using my large plastic paint tray. Now that I don't have an extra paint tray, I have wet paintings all over the place.
With the ezPort, I won't have such a problem. I bought the 12X16 Wet Penal Carrier from Artwork Essentials because you can store different size panels in it. I needed on for 11X14, 9X12 and 8X10. I ordered it early Thursday morning and it arrive by 9:15 AM Saturday. I am thrilled.
I can even store my brush washer in it!

The First Two of Stage Two - Forty Eight to Go!

I am working with studies taking them to stage two of the process I am learning at the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks with Susan Sarback.
Here are two of today's studies. The study with the blocks was painted while it was overcast so I didn't put shadows. I started everything cool but the orange. I will ask if that it correct next time I am in class.
The sun started to come out so I setup another study because I decided after I waited for the clouds, again, that it was going to remain sunny. No - that it not a complaint. I am always glad to see the sun.
I set up a second study with a cobalt vase and an orange.
Both of these studies are to be done quickly and constantly comparing the light and dark, warm and cool, bright and dull. Great exercises.

Drawing Class Today

I decided to work on a value study today in class. This will be a ongoing process for me because I need to train my eye to see the differences in plane changes and values. I also need to improve my drawing skills.
I worked on newspaper print using charcoal and a white conte crayon. I also add notes to it as I work.
I included a close up of the work. The bottles are straight. I just take pictures crooked.

Priming for Studies

I was priming over my old studies with primer paint to start my 50 stage 2 studies.
I found it messier than gesso so I painted over a few studies. The boards that I have that are blank on one side I gessoed.

Good Goals After the Color Intensity Workshop with Susan Sarback

Here is a great goal from the Color Intensity Workshop. Paint at least 50 stage 2 paintings. So, that is what I will be doing for the next month.
I love stage 2.
Here is an example. BTW - there isn't a camera made that will ever pick up the true color of these studies and paintings.

Painting and Study - I fixed my reader card problem

Okay - I was able to fix my reader card problem to post my painting and study from the Color Intensity Workshop. After critique, I was told to work on more peripheral studies.
Oh - and the workshop was incredible.

Still Working On Paintings

I am working on an oil painting of objects cropped very close and large in the workshop I am taking, the Color Intensity workshop. Sorry no pictures. I am still forget to take pictures before the sun goes down. In the meantime, the Color Intensity workshop at the School of Light and Color has been outstanding. The instruction by Susan Sarback and the hard working classmates has made it an incredible experience.
It was only offered once this year but if you want to start to learn color, this is the workshop you should take.
